Shopping spaces have been changing from the very beginning of trading. From medieval markets, covered shopping galleries, to isolated boxes we call shopping malls. The rise of online shopping, finding local produce and visiting smaller shops has been further accelerated by the pandemic. With new ways of shopping, the model of large shopping malls has been dying out for some time, and the question now is what do we do with these quickly built structures.

The project transforms Shopping Mall Vič in Ljubljana from a consumerist place to a social generator. The mix of residential, business and entertainment programmes creates a place to strengthen the community and make a good living environment.

By placing mixed programmes in the structure, the center attracts a diverse population.

A uniform structure is divided to create a habitable environment inside.

The newly opened streets, not regulated by the working hours of the store, are accessible to everyone and at all times thus providing the neighborhood with a much needed public space.

Their crossroad creates a smaller square surrounded by restaurants, coworking and a cultural hall.

Much of the non structural elements of the original building are removed, the concrete columns and beams remain.

CLT elements are added to the existing construction in the residential areas, creating a second level.

Cohousing

Cohousing community is organised along the common courtyard. All entrances are oriented towards it thus providing a more frequent contact among residents.

Besides units for couples, single parents and families, there are coliving apartments for up to four people and cohousing groups for up to 6 elderly.
